Coupe des Nations 1930
The Coupe des Nations 1930 (official name: Tournoi International de Football ), and Le Tournoi des Nations (dt .: Cup of Nations ), was a soccer tournament in the summer of 1930 in Switzerland Geneva , organized by the local club Servette Geneva . The frequently used name Cup of Nations is misleading because no national teams, but only clubs took part in the competition. Servette had previously won the Swiss football championship and organized the tournament as an alternative to the 1930 World Cup , in which only a few European countries ( Belgium , France , Yugoslavia and Romania ) took part. At the same time, the tournament was part of the opening celebrations of the Stade des Charmilles , in which all 15 matches were held.
The tournament is partly considered to be the forerunner of the European Champions Cup , as it was the first organized tournament with national title winners from Europe alongside the Mitropa Cup . The champions of all major European football nations were invited. The British countries were an exception, as they were excluded from FIFA at the time .
The winner of the tournament was the Hungarian club Újpest Budapest , who won all four games and scored 16 goals in them and conceded only one. After winning the Coupe des Nations, the players of Újpest FC nicknamed themselves Champions of the Champions .
In the following years several attempts were made to organize a regular tournament for the national champions. Northern Italian cities had originally planned to host the 1931 tournament, but this plan failed due to financial reasons. The first follow-up tournament was held during the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 , but only two of the invited teams accepted the invitation. The European championship teams met after 1930, with the exception of the Mitropa Cup and the Coupe Latine , only in 1955 when UEFA, founded in 1954 , brought the European Cup into being.
