József Fogl , also called József Fogoly , József Újpesti and Fogl III (born August 14, 1897 in Újpest , Austria-Hungary ; † February 6, 1971 in Budapest , Hungary ), was a Hungarian football player who became part of the regular formation in the 1920s Hungarian national team and won two championship titles and the Mitropacup with Újpest FC .
Club career
Fogl spent his entire career with the first division club Újpest, where his brother Károly, who was two years older , also worked. Together the two formed a defensive pair in the 1920s that became known in European football as the Fogl lock ( Fogl-gát ). While the right-back Károly was considered a leading player, the József on the left was a tireless worker who also had good shooting technique.
During his active time, Hungarian football was dominated by the two traditional clubs FTC and MTK , for Újpest it was usually enough for second or third places. Also in the cup final you had to give in to your two rivals no less than four times. In 1929 the Violets reached the final of the Mitropacup with victories over Sparta Prague and SK Rapid Wien , where the team around Fogl, Stefan Auer and Albert Ströck defeated Prague Slavia with a total score of 7: 3.
Also in the championship things went well for the newcomers and after the older Fogl brother had ended his career, József played with Gyula Dudás and was captain of the team that won the championship title in 1930 and 1931 respectively. In addition, they were also successful in the 1930 Coupe des Nations , where they defeated the Slavia again in the final.
National team
Fogl made his debut in the national team at the side of his brother in November 1920 in a 1: 2 against Austria in Budapest. In his first 27 international matches, the defense was Fogl II - Fogl III 26 times, and it wasn't until the late 1920s that he was often used with other defensive partners such as Gyula Mándi , László Sternberg and Lajos Korányi .
At the Olympic Games in 1924 , József, unlike his brother, was only a substitute. He also took part in the Nations Cup, which was held for the first time , but the Hungarians only finished fourth. His last game for Hungary was against the Netherlands in June 1930 . Fogl represented his country in a total of 38 international matches.
