Stefan Burkhalter

Stefan “Burki” Burkhalter (born June 1, 1974 in Frauenfeld ) is a Swiss wrestler . He is the oldest still active wreath wrestler in Switzerland (as of 2019). Burkhalter describes himself as an agricultural manager. He also works as an actor, chauffeur and bodyguard, for example for the former bobsleigh driver and Olympic champion Hans «Hausi» Leutenegger .

Career and occupation

Burkhalter grew up on his parents' farm in Homburg, Thurgau . He took over this on May 1st, 1999 with 14 cows and lives there to this day with his children Jeanine and Thomas. He now runs the farm with 40 cows. He attended elementary school in Homburg, middle school in Hörstetten and upper school in Steckborn. After leaving school, he successfully completed an agricultural training course in Kaltenbach and Pfyn. He also graduated from the Arenenberg Agricultural School in Salenstein. In the military, Burkhalter was stationed with the grenadiers in Isone, Ticino , and "enjoyed" this time. Since 2018 he has been an active member with his dog "Norman" in the SOS Listenhunde - Ostschweiz association.

Swing

Burkhalter began his sporting career in the Hörhausen youth team. On his 14th birthday he sniffed sawdust for the first time at the Frauenfeld wrestling club . Due to a lack of young talent in Frauenfeld, he moved to the Ottenberg wrestling club in Weinfelden after a year . He is still active there today.

Burkhalter has achieved numerous victories at all kinds of wrestling festivals. He has already won 108 wreaths in his career, making him a member of the “Hunderterklub”, the most exclusive group in wrestling. Among them are 4 wreaths victories (2 Schwägalp 2006/2010, Appenzeller and Stoos-Schwinget), 24 wreaths, 18 mountain wreaths, 64 cantonal wreaths and over 40 regional festival victories. His competition weight is 118 kilograms.

Burkhalter also won some successes and wreaths in national gymnastics. He began wrestling with the Weinfelden wrestling team, where he became Swiss champion in the team. After a few years, Burkhalter was asked by the 12-time Swiss champion STV Willisau whether he would be available in the heavyweight division. They also achieved top results there.

In the official annual points list of the Swiss Federal Wrestling Association , Burkhalter took 68th place in 2019.

Burkhalter already played in 2013 in the film "Dinu". The film is about an underdog wrestler who is supposed to take over his parents' indebted farm. In the second and third seasons of the crime series " Wilder " Burkhalter played the role of a bodyguard for a drug boss. The seasons were broadcast on January 14, 2020 (“Zecke”) and January 21, 2020 (“Lie”) on SRF 1 . The film was shot in Saignelégier in the Jura . Burkhalter had not applied for the role, but simply received “a call from the director on a Sunday while roasting at around 2 p.m.”.

Trivia

His dog "Norman" is a Dogo Argentino , a breed that requires approval in several cantons.
He names the wrestler Christian von Weissenfluh and the boxer Mike Tyson as role models .
Burkhalter eats at least one kilogram of meat every day. According to his own statements, he and his son ate 678 kilograms of meat in one year.
