Stefan Gronert

Stefan Gronert (* 1964 ) is a German art historian and exhibition curator .

life and work

Gronert studied art history , education , German literature and philosophy at the Ruhr University in Bochum. In 1990 he completed his studies with an MA and a thesis on "Black Paintings" by Frank Stella . In 1993 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the Erasmus portraits of Hans Holbein the Younger in Bochum. Gronert examines a group of painted portraits of Erasmus of Rotterdam from 1523 and around 1532, which are in Basel, Paris and New York.

In the same year he joined the Kunstmuseum Bonn as a volunteer . Since 1996 he has headed the graphic collection there, which also includes an extensive photographic inventory. From 2009 to 2016 Gronert was also curator for contemporary art at the Kunstmuseum Bonn and specialist editor of sehepunkte . Since 2001 he has been a lecturer at the art history institutes of the Universities of Bonn and Cologne with a focus on modern and contemporary photography .

Since May 2016 Gronert has been working as a curator for photography and media art at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover. In 2017 he initiated a photo theory blog financed by the Lower Saxony Foundation .

He is currently a lecturer at the art history institutes of the University of Osnabrück and the University of Fine Arts Braunschweig .
