Life
Heinig is the son of a carpet dealer in Dortmund. After completing secondary school, he completed an apprenticeship as a wholesale and foreign trade clerk at the textile wholesaler Gustav Steinweg in Dortmund. Building on this, he trained as a retail assistant at the retail training center in Springe . He then moved to Telgte to work for the fashion chain Modea (today: Takko ).
In 1994, the then 31-year-old Heinig founded the discount-oriented fashion chain KiK with financial support from the Tengelmann Group , in which he holds 15 percent through his Dortmund-based BH Holding GmbH. The non-food discounter TEDi was founded in 2004, again together with the Tengelmann Group, with Heinig holding a 65 percent stake through his holding company. In addition, Heinig has been involved in Woolworth Germany since 2010 . Heinig is also active in the real estate business with BH Holding GmbH.
In connection with the low wages paid to the workers in the textile factories in Bangladesh, for example, Stefan Heinig came under fire as the managing director responsible. He was also accused of being largely responsible for preventing works councils in the KiK branches.
In 2005, Stefan Heinig and other entrepreneurs founded the non-profit foundation help and hope . The foundation, based in the Westphalian town of Bönen , supports children in need on a national and international level in accordance with its statutes. The focus is on combating poverty, promoting youth welfare and promoting training and further education. Since 2005, Stefan Heinig has also been chairman of the board of trustees.
