Stefan Karwiese

Stefan Karwiese (born November 25, 1941 in Königsberg ) is an Austrian classical archaeologist and numismatist .

Karwiese attended the Federal High School in Salzburg (Matura 1960) and studied Classical Archeology, Ancient History and Numismatics at the University of Vienna from 1961 to 1967 . From 1963 he worked at the Austrian Archaeological Institute . In 1967 he was with the dissertation Attis in ancient art doctorate .

Karwiese specialized early on in field archeology and ancient numismatics. From 1964 he was involved in various excavations at home and abroad: In Immurium (near Salzburg), Aguntum (East Tyrol) and Elis (Greece). Since 1980 he has headed the archaeological research project Archabbey St. Peter zu Salzburg. From 1980 to 1986 he was deputy head of the excavations in Ephesus , and from 1993 to 1998 their overall director. He also headed the excavations in Mondsee from 1988 to 1991 .

Since 1987 Karwiese has given lectures on Greek and Roman numismatics at the Institute for Numismatics and Monetary History of the University of Vienna . In 1995 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the oldest coinage of Ephesus. In 1998 he was made an associate professor at the university. He retired on January 1, 2007.
