Stefan Novák, Bishop of Prešov (1913–1918)

Stefan Novák (born December 4, 1879 in Ubla in Zemplín , Slovakia ; † September 5, 1932 in Budapest , Hungary ) was the Greek Catholic bishop of the Prešov eparchy from 1913 to 1918 .

Live and act

He grew up as an orphan and his father, a Greek Catholic priest, died soon after he was born. He attended high school in Uzhhorod and studied at the archbishop's seminary in Esztergom . In Vienna he received his doctorate in theology. On January 9, 1905, he was ordained a priest by Bishop Július Fircák (Firczák Gyula) in Uzhhorod. Appointed to the diplomatic service in the Vatican, he had great influence there, but was appointed Bishop of Prešov in 1913. He was ordained bishop by Antal Papp on January 11, 1914.

He promoted school education and introduced the Slavic language in the Greek Catholic rite. As Bishop of Prešov he retired on October 1, 1918 and went to Hungary, in 1920 he was called to Rome.

He returned to Hungary and died on September 5, 1932.
