Schödl specialized in insects, in 1988 he started a dissertation on the water beetles (Hydrophilidae) of the genus Berosus in the Old World. His doctoral supervisor was the then director of the 2nd zoological department of the Natural History Museum Vienna , Maximilian Fischer , a specialist in the hymenoptera family of brackish wasps . For Schödl there were points of contact not only with the scientific work of the Natural History Museum, but also with the hymenoptera, about whom he later wrote numerous works. His dissertation was mainly supervised by Manfred A. Jäch , the head of the water beetle collection, with whom Schödl later undertook several research trips to East Asia. For Schödl, his dissertation and the museum collection were a starting point for the revision of the globally widespread genus Berosus . He carried out this revision between 1991 and 1994.

Stefan Schödl described 52 new taxa, mainly water beetles and ants of the genus Meranoplus . Up to 2005, 33 insect species were named after him with the specific epithet schoedli , stefani or stefanschoedli .
