Stefan Sofijanski

Stefan Antonow Sofijanski ( Bulgarian Стефан Антонов Софиянски ; born November 7, 1951 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian politician , former long-time mayor of Sofia and former prime minister .

Studies and professional career

Sofijanski completed a degree in statistics at the Karl Marx Institute for Economics in Sofia , which he completed with a graduation .

Subsequently, he worked during the rule of the Bulgarian Communist Party from 1973 to 1975 as an employee in the Ministry of Communication and Information. He then was a research assistant at the National Center for the Establishment and Development of a United System of Public Relations from 1975 to 1991.

Political career

Minister and Mayor of Sofia

Sofijanski began his political career in 1990 after the collapse of the communist government of Todor Zhivkov as a member of the anti-communist Union of Democratic Forces ( Sajus na Demokratitschnite Sili ) founded in 1990 , in which he soon rose to become one of the leading politicians.

From November 1991 to December 1992 he was a member of the government of Filip Dimitrov as Chairman of the Committee for Post and Telecommunications with the rank of minister.

On November 19, 1995 he was elected mayor of Sofia for the first time . He was re-elected as such in 1999 and 2003. On June 29, 2005 he resigned from this office.

Prime Minister and MP

On February 12, 1997, as the incumbent mayor of Sofia, he was appointed incumbent Prime Minister by the then President Petar Stojanow in order to form a transitional government after the resignation of Shan Widenow . On May 21, 1997, his party friend Ivan Kostov took over the office of Prime Minister after the SDS had won the National Assembly elections.

After the defeat of the SDS in the elections for the National Assembly on June 17, 2001, he resigned from the SDS and a short time later founded the Union of Free Democrats ( Sajus na swobodnite Demokratie ). In 2005 the SSD merged with the Bulgarian People's Union ( Balgarski Naroden Sajus ).

After his resignation as Mayor of Sofia, he was elected on June 25, 2005 as a candidate of the BNS as a member of the National Assembly. From January 1, 2007 to June 5, 2007, after Bulgaria's accession to the European Union, he was one of Bulgaria's interim members of the European Parliament .
