List of Mayors of Sofia
This list includes the mayors of Sofia , the largest city in Bulgaria - Sofia .
Today's Bulgarian capital Sofia looks back on a centuries-old and eventful history. According to archaeological finds that show that there was an 8,000 year old Stone Age settlement here, Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe.
In the 7th century BC The Thracian tribe of the Serds settled in this area . From them the ancient name of the city - Serdica was derived. Philip II , King of Macedonia , conquered in 339 BC. The city. After the conquest by the Romans in 29 BC. They built the "Ulpia Serdica" there and built the city into the capital of the Inner Dacia . Under the Roman emperor Marcus Ulpius Trajan , Sofia developed into a flourishing metropolis of military importance from 98 to 117 AD, where the ancient streets of Via Militaris and Via Trajana crossed. In 342 or 343 AD, the Imperial Synod of Serdica took place there with over 300 bishops from all over Europe. The failure of the council is considered to be one of the causes of the division in the Western Christian Church.
In 447 the city was destroyed by the Huns under Attila and later by the Goths , but was later rebuilt. In 809 the city was taken by the Bulgarian army of the ruler Krum and since then has belonged to the Bulgarian Empire (from 1018 to 1194 under Byzantine rule). Since the city was in the center of his empire, it was renamed "Sredez" (literally: middle ). It developed again into an important strategic and administrative center. In the 14th century Sredez got its current name “Sofia” after the church “ Sweta Sofia”.
In 1386 the city was conquered by the Ottomans and is the administrative center of all Bulgarian territories, which at times had a population of over 71,000.
On January 4, 1878, the Russian General Gurko (1828-1901) liberated the city during the Russo-Turkish War . The First Mayor Manoloki Taschew was appointed by the Governor of the Provisional Russian Civil Administration of Sofia (1878–1879) Pyotr Alabin . After the liberation of Bulgaria and the constituent assembly in Veliko Tarnovo , Sofia was proclaimed the capital of the newly established Bulgarian state.
