Christo Popov
Christo Georgiev Popow (also written Hristo Georgiev Popov , Bulgarian Христо Георгиев Попов ; born December 30, 1858 in Shumen , then Ottoman Empire ; † October 28, 1951 in Sofia , Bulgaria ) was a Bulgarian officer and politician of the Liberal Party . He commanded the Bulgarian units on the south wing in the Battle of Slivnitsa in the Serbian-Bulgarian War and was able to July 7th . / November 19, 1885 greg. Repel the Serbian Morava Division with a few companies. Between April 12, 1899 and January 4, 1901 he was mayor of the Bulgarian capital Sofia and between 1915 and 1916 Minister of Interior and Health in the cabinet of Vasil Radoslawow .
Life
Christo Popow was born on December 18 . / December 30, 1858 greg. Born in the northern Bulgarian city of Shumen. In the period 1875/76 he worked as a teacher in his hometown and during the Russo-Turkish War from 1877 to 1878 Popov worked with the Russian army . After the liberation of Bulgaria , he graduated from the first class of the military academy in the Bulgarian capital in 1879 , and then from the military law academy in Saint Petersburg .
On September 11, 1885, two days after the union of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia , he was appointed commander of the 1st Sofia regiment. In the Serbian-Bulgarian War of 1885 he took part with his regiment in the Battle of Slivnitsa . Popov had the rank of captain at this point . On November 7th, July / November 19, 1885 greg. he was given the command of the extreme left wing of the front line, he was able to repel the advancing Morava and Šumadija divisions at Gurgulajt and Galabowo. Together with his regiment, Popov took Bresnik and took part in the battle at Banski dol and in the battle of Pirot . For his services in the war he was awarded the Military Order for Bravery III. honored.
A year later, the Bulgarian Prince Alexander I was forced to abdicate by an officer coup initiated by Russia and was taken prisoner to Russia . Christo Popow took part in the counter-coup led by Parliament President Stefan Stambolow . In 1889 he finished his career in the army with the rank of major .
After leaving the army behind, Popov studied law at the University of Geneva . After his return he became active in the Stambolov Liberal Party and from 1899 to 1901 mayor of Sofia. Popov took part in the Balkan wars in 1912/13 and after their end was chairman of the inquiry commission of the Bulgarian parliament , which examined the reasons for the national catastrophe.
From 1915 to 1916 Popov was Minister of the Interior and Health Minister in the liberal cabinet of Vasil Radoslawow. After the First World War he was sentenced by the state court to 10 years imprisonment for this post . A year later he was given an amnesty. Christo Popov died on October 28, 1951 in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.
