Stefan Toschew (also Stefan Toshev , Bulgarian Стефан Тошев ; * December 18, 1859 in Stara Sagora ; † November 27, 1924 in Plovdiv ) was a Bulgarian general in the First World War .

Life

Toshev's mother was a teacher during the National Revival period . He volunteered for the Bulgarian Opalchentsi Corps during the Russo-Turkish War and later worked as a translator. On May 10, 1879 he graduated from the military school in Sofia . Then he served in the police of Eastern Rumelia . In the Serbian-Bulgarian War of 1885 he served as a captain and battalion commander.

Later he commanded the 1st (Sofia) Infantry Regiment and from 1908 the 1st (Sofia) Infantry Division. In the Balkan Wars he rose to lieutenant general and commanded the 5th Army in the Second Balkan War.

When Bulgaria entered the First World War, Toshev received command of the 3rd Army, with which he defended the border with Romania in the Dobruja . After Romania entered the war in 1916, he successfully fought against the allied Russian-Romanian troops. At the end of November 1916, after conflicts with General Field Marshal August von Mackensen, he was replaced by Stefan Neresow and appointed military governor in occupied Macedonia. In March 1917 he was promoted to general of the infantry . In June 1918 he was given command of the 4th Army in Eastern Thrace.

After the end of the war Toshev was transferred to the reserve in 1919 and was chairman of the Union of Reserve Officers. He died in Plovdiv in November 1924 and was buried in Sofia.

Honors

In 1942, the place Kasamkjoj in northern Bulgaria was renamed in honor of Stefan Toshev in " General Toshevo ".
