Stefan Weinzierl , (born June 5, 1967 in Bamberg ) is a German acoustician and musicologist as well as a university professor for audio communication at the TU Berlin . His main research interests are in the field of virtual acoustic reality, room acoustics, musical acoustics, audio technology and auditory perception.

Career

As the son of Gerhard Weinzierl, high school teacher for music and a doctorate in musicology, and Renate Weinzierl, b. Courage, Weinzierl grew up in a musical environment. His sister Susanne was a French horn player at the Pfalztheater in Kaiserslautern and is married to the conductor Francesco Corti . Weinzierl had been taking piano lessons since he was four, won several prizes in the Jugend musiziert competition, and passed the C examination for church music towards the end of his school days. After graduating from high school in 1985, he studied physics at the University of Erlangen and the TU Berlin (diploma in 1992) and sound engineer at the UdK Berlin (diploma in 1994). From 1993 to 1995 he studied musicology at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1999 he did his doctorate at the TU Berlin with Helga de la Motte-Haber in the field of musical acoustics with an acoustic reconstruction of the performance conditions and the original performance rooms of Ludwig van Beethoven .

After completing his studies, he worked alongside his doctorate as a pianist and song accompanist, among others, with the chansonnier Tim Fischer , as a music critic for the Berliner Tagesspiegel , and as a freelance producer and sound engineer for numerous labels and broadcasters, including Deutsche Grammophon (DGG), Teldec Classics, ars musici, CPO, Ondine, assai, Ambitus, Hänssler Classic, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Südwestfunk and Radio Svizzera Italiana (rsi) in Lugano.

Between 1998 and 2003 he taught music transmission and digital audio technology at the UdK Berlin . In 2003 he was appointed professor for the theory of music transmission at the Erich Thienhaus Institute at the Detmold University of Music . Since 2004 he has been professor for audio communication at the TU Berlin .

From 2011 to 2018 he was the spokesman for a DFG research group on virtual acoustics (simulation and evaluation of acoustic environments, SEACEN), from 2016 to 2018 he was the spokesman for a European consortium on audio branding and music information retrieval (ABC_DJ). As the head of the hybrid platform, he coordinates, together with the civil engineer Christoph Gengnagel , the cooperation between the TU Berlin and the University of the Arts (UdK) Berlin in research and teaching. Since 2018 he has been the spokesman for the SHAPING SPACE consortium, which develops new technologies for spatial design and examines changes in design practices, for example in architecture and product design, in the digital age.

Weinzierl works as an expert and consultant in the field of room acoustics, for example in the planning of the new concert hall in Munich's Werksviertel. Since 2018 he has been running the engineering office Berlin Acoustics and Music Consulting (BEAM) together with Jochen Steffens and Fabian Seipel.

He is married to the biologist Monika Brunner-Weinzierl . The couple has two children.
