Stefan von Jankovich , (born as: Pribéri Jankovich István Kálmán ) (born January 25, 1920 in Budapest ; † January 23, 2002 in Zurich ) was a Hungarian-Swiss architect , artist and author .

Life

Stefan von Jankovich was an architect, site and regional planner. He developed the JANKOSWISS modular system that he patented. As an athlete, he was best known as a sailor. The artist Jankovich was recognized by his critics by comparing his graphics and watercolors with the artists William Turner and Ferdinand Hodler . As a freedom fighter and free thinker, he was an important figure at the time of the Hungarian uprising in 1956 . He became speaker of the student assembly and co-author of human rights on 10 points. After his serious car accident in 1964, he had a near-death experience that he experienced for many years . In the course of time he tried to explain this experience again and again through scientific literature. He was one of the first to publish this experience in 1984 in his book: "I was clinically dead. Death - my most beautiful experience" in Drei Eichen Verlag . This book has been translated into 8 languages. Further books followed, which made him a philosopher and spiritual teacher by studying the diverse scientific literature . In 1984 he founded the "Forum Homo Harmonicus" in Zurich, a basis for his own intellectual and spiritual work and a meeting place for interested people.

Origin and family

Stefan von Jankovich was baptized a Roman Catholic. His father, the lawyer Pribéri Jankovich István, was director of the State Accident Insurance Company (OTP) in Budapest and was an art collector. Stefan's mother, Lidia, b. Arkay (daughter of the Art Nouveau architect Arkay Aladár, famous in Hungary) was a painter. Stefan von Jankovich found the upbringing in his parents' home to be shaped by religious and ethical principles, as well as the artistic talents of his parents and grandparents. From his first marriage to Agnes Ekkert, he has two daughters Agnes (born 1945) and Marta (born 1947). The second marriage to Anna Nagymengyeri Eggenhofer remained childless.

School and study

Jankovich attended primary school in Budapest and the Archbishop's Realgymnasium in Budapest. From 1938 he studied architecture at the Technical University in Budapest. He received a grant from the British Council to study in Great Britain, a second grant from the German-Hungarian Society gave him the opportunity to study in Germany and a third grant to study in Rome. In 1943 he completed his studies as a qualified engineer. For the next two years he studied economics at the Budapest School of Economics.

Working life

From 1942 to 1948 Stefan von Jankovich worked as a freelance architect in Budapest. In addition, he worked as an assistant at the chair for urban development and regional planning at the Technical University in Budapest. From 1948 until his escape to Switzerland (November 1956) he was employed full-time at the Technical University in Budapest.

After fleeing from 1957 to 1961, he worked in an architectural office in Zurich and from 1961 onwards he ran his own office in Zurich. In addition to conventional construction, he built with the prefabrication modular system "JANKOSWISS", which he patented. In 1964 he opened another office in Lugano, but had to close it again in 1978 due to the serious traffic accident and the resulting financial burden. Until his retirement in 1985 he worked as an architect and planner as a "freelancer" in Zurich.

retirement

The end of his professional career was difficult for him and the lack of provision for old age gave him existential fears until, after a 3-day retreat, he felt his job. He founded the "Forum Homo Harmonicus", a meeting place for people who are looking for their spiritual path. He wrote books, held seminars and was highly valued as a speaker and seminar leader on television and at home and abroad until his death. In 2002 Stefan von Jankovich died in Zurich after a short illness.
