Stefano Jacini (born June 20, 1826 in Casalbuttano , † March 25, 1891 in Milan ) was an Italian politician and economist.

Career

Stefano Jacini was the son of an old and wealthy Lombard family who, in addition to a profitable estate, ran linen and silk weaving. He owed his schooling to the Fellenberg Institute in Hofwil , which he had to leave again in 1836 because the Austrian government of Lombardy forbade schooling abroad. He later attended various schools in Milan and then studied law at the University of Pavia , where he also received his doctorate in 1850. He then traveled to a large part of Europe and the Orient.

His writing “La proprietà fondiaria e la popolazione agricola in Lombardia” (Milan 1856) was awarded a prize by the Milanese Società d'incoraggiamento di scienze e lettere , where it also earned him membership of the Istituto Lombardo . In his work “Sulle condizioni economiche della Valtellina” ( On the State of the Valtellina ) from 1858 he condemned the Austrian administrative principles with great severity. He was also one of the founders of the Perseveranza newspaper .

Jacini represented the constituency of Pizzighettone from 1860 until his appointment as senator in the Camera dei deputati , as minister he twice renounced his mandate. Jacini was twice minister of public works : in the 3rd cabinet of Cavour from 1860 to 1861, and from 1864 to 1867 under Alfonso La Marmora (2nd and 3rd cabinets) and in the 2nd cabinet of Bettino Ricasoli . He made important contributions to the development of rail, post, and telegraph traffic in Italy; in particular, he worked very hard for the Gotthard Railway project .

He was also involved in the Italian-Prussian alliance in the war against Austria. In 1870 he became a member of the Senate in Rome. From 1881 to 1886 he was president of a commission of inquiry into the possibilities of agriculture in Italy and in this function also published an extensive report on the subject. In 1880 he was rewarded with the title of Count.
