The Steinberg Tunnel is the southernmost of the 66 railway tunnels on the high-speed line from Hanover to Würzburg . The 579 meter long tube passes under the Würzburger Stein , a limestone cliff , and therefore bears his name.

The south portal of the tunnel was given a special design. The city and railways chose a cladding made of light limestone from several suggested variants.

In the tunnel, the new line leading in north-south direction to Würzburg reaches Würzburg main station, which runs in east-west direction, in a continuous curve.

The route describes a left curve with a radius of 1,602 meters in a southerly direction. The gradient rises to the south with 1.7 per thousand. Due to numerous constraint points, the standard curve radius of 7,000 meters for the new line in this area could not be adhered to. The tunnel can be driven at 160 km / h.

The south-east portal of the tunnel is followed by a 576-meter-long ramp that leads into the Würzburg main station ; on the ramp, the distance drops with a continuous 12.5 per mil. To the northeast, after the Dürrbachtal bridge, the 2.2 kilometer long Roßberg tunnel connects .

The tube lies continuously above the groundwater.

From the mid-1970s, there was massive resistance in Würzburg to the plans of the Federal Railroad at that time , the well-known vineyard, which u. a. was praised by Goethe to tunnel under. Among other things, a tunnel variant was discussed that would have started in Würzburg Central Station and would only come to the surface after 11.2 kilometers of the route.

The city of Würzburg brought a number of design requirements into the discussion, in particular the design of the tunnel portal, the retaining walls and noise protection measures. Several lawsuits by landowners before the administrative court in Würzburg because of feared noise pollution or the disruptive effect of the adjacent bridge structure were unsuccessful. After test drilling, experts refuted fears that the largest contiguous vineyard in the Federal Republic of Germany with an area of ​​100 hectares could have been damaged.

The planning approval decision for the subsequent introduction of the new line to the Würzburg main station was issued in March 1984. The planning approval decision for the Steinberg Tunnel (including the section to the Main Valley Bridge) was expected in the first half of 1984.

In the late 1970s, a minimum curve radius of 1,500 meters was planned. This corresponded to the speed-distance profile of the fastest trains approaching the station. The planned length at the end of 1977 was 530 meters, with the tube going south from three to 12.5 per thousand. At the end of 1983 a length of 753 meters was planned.

The task was given to the Roßberg Tunnel / Steinberg Tunnel working group consisting of six companies under the technical management of the Austrian company Monierbau . The contract was awarded in mid-1985.

On September 4, 1985, the tunnel Magarete Jaumann, Wife was the then Bavarian Economics Minister Anton Jaumann solemnly struck . At this point the excavators had already penetrated around 70 meters into the mountain. The breakthrough of the tube, which was then planned to be 581 meters long, was planned for the end of the year. It was the last tunnel cut in the southern section of the line, which went into operation in 1988.

The tube was punctured on December 4, 1985.
