Steindachneria argentea is a 30 centimeter long marine fish from the order of the cod-like (Gadiformes). It occurs at depths of 180 to 400 meters in the tropical western Atlantic , from the coast of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico to the coast of Venezuela .

features

Steindachneria argentea has an elongated, laterally flattened and pointed back body without a caudal fin. Its color is silvery, the upper side a little brownish, shimmering purple below. Its long anal fin is supported by 123 to 125 fin rays. The dorsal fin is divided, the first is short and high and has a single spine, the second is low and long. The pelvic fins , whose first rays are elongated, are located far in front below the pectoral fins . The anus and sexual opening are separate, the anus is located far in front between the pelvic fins, the sexual opening in front of the beginning of the anal fin. In the larvae, the anus is just in front of the anal fin and moves forward in the course of development. On the sides of the head and on the abdomen, in a ring around the anus, there are luminous organs (English name: luminous hooks). Pyloric tubes are missing.

Systematics

The systematic classification of the species is controversial. The American ichthyologist Joseph S. Nelson assigns them to the hake (Merlucciidae) as the only species of the subfamily Steindachneriinae . The Japanese ichthyologist Hiromitsu Endo puts the species in a monotypical family, which is said to be the sister group of the also tail-finless grenadiers (Macrouridae).
