The Steinkopf is a 452.4 m high elevation, it is forested, lies on the Hessian-Thuringian state border and marks the field boundary between the town of Vacha in the Wartburg district in Thuringia and the Hessian neighboring town of Heringen in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district . The stone head has been used in agriculture and forestry for centuries. In the High Middle Ages, the Hohe Strazza in the Vacha – Berka / Werra section led along the Steinkopf and its neighboring heights and foothills . For their control there was an old guard station on the neighboring mountain Hohe Wart to the east .
In terms of settlement geography, east of the Steinkopf in the valley there is a small settlement chamber with the current desert areas of Heiligenroda , Schwenge and Niederndorf . The starting point was the Kreuzberg monastery in the Werra valley . The towns of Oberzella and Thalhausen will also have belonged to the settlement chamber. As a result of the border location, the Schwenge, Niederndorf and Heiligenroda farms on the Steinkopf on the Thuringian side were relocated.
Today there is a rest area with a view of the Wartburg on the Steinkopf summit .
