Stone cross of elves

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The stone cross of Elben is a sandstone cross from the 15th century in the district of Elbenberg , a district of the city of Naumburg in the northern Hessian district of Kassel .

The cross stands at the junction of the road to Elbenberg from the road Naumburg- Fritzlar , on the opposite side of the road to its original location. It is 74 cm high, 81 cm wide and 32 cm thick. At its foot there is a long, grooved ploughshare chiseled in , which came to light in the 1970s when the previously deeply sunken cross was re-erected.

According to legend, the cross marks the place where in 1453, during the feud of the federal rulers, a skirmish between Friedrich IV. Von Hertingshausen on the one hand and Werner von Elben , Heinrich von Grifte and Otto Hund on the other hand took place, in which Friedrich von Hertingshausen hit hard with a racing spear Thigh was wounded, fell from his horse and was captured by his opponents. It was later often claimed that Friedrich's leg was amputated afterwards, but most contemporary sources only report that he was severely paralyzed afterwards. Since the Pflugsech was a peasant and craftsman's mark in the Middle Ages, it is rather unlikely that the cross actually represents an atonement cross for this event.
