Stenton is a small town in the Scottish council area of East Lothian . It is located in the sparsely populated northeast of the region on the northwestern foothills of the Lammermuir Hills . The cities of Haddington and Dunbar are nine kilometers to the west and seven kilometers to the northeast, respectively. On the northeast edge of the village is the Rood Well mineral spring , which is classified as a monument in the highest Scottish monument category A.

history

The origins of the village can be traced back to around 1500. The predominantly agricultural town was created before the agricultural revolution and many of the efficiency-enhancing innovations were not implemented there. Due to the well-preserved buildings and structures, Stenton is of both architectural and historical value and was therefore classified as an Outstanding Conservation Area in 1969 . A weekly cattle market between 1681 and 1862 underscores the agricultural importance of Stenton.

Stenton's history is closely linked to the surrounding mansions, Rushlaw House and Whittingehame House , or previously Whittingehame Tower . Stenton is also located in the catchment area of the Biel House, which was built around 1650 .

From January 1939 to September 1941, Whittingehame House housed the Whittingehame Farm School , a training facility for children and young people who had come to Great Britain on the Kindertransporte .

After 692 inhabitants were counted in Stenton in 1861, the number sank to 594 by 1881. At the time of the 1961 census survey, 114 people lived in Stenton. In the course of the following decades the population rose to 200 in 1991.

geography

Stenton is located on the foothills of the Lammermuir Hills around two kilometers north of the 297 m high Deuchrie Dod . 1.5 m to the south is the Pressmennan Loch reservoir with the Pressmennan Wood forest area . Not far from the village runs the Sauchet Water , which flows 1.5 km north with the Whittingehame Water and forms the Biel Water , which flows into the Firth of Forth at Dunbar .
