Stenus comma , Syn .: S. bipunctatus is a beetle from the family of the short-winged (Staphylinidae).
features
The beetles reach a body length of 5 to 6 millimeters. The wings have a yellow, round discal patch. The legs of the animals are colored black. Only the first part of the jaw palpation is light, the others are black. The yellow discal spot is slightly larger than that of the similar stenus biguttatus . The body is also more robust than that of Stenus longipes . The back of the head is keeled bluntly.
Occurrence and way of life
The animals are found in the Palearctic and North America. The northern distribution extends to the Arctic Circle , in places the species is also found in Lapland . In Norway it is only sporadic in the south. In central and southern Europe the species is widespread and common to very common. The animals colonize the banks of waters with clay or humus and loose vegetation. Moist clay soils, for example in fields, are also populated. The adults often fly in high temperatures. They occur from spring to autumn. The larvae have particularly long antennae, jaw buttons and legs.
