Stephan II (Champagne)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephan II (French: Étienne ; † between 1045 and 1048) was a Count of Meaux and Troyes . He was the second son of Count Odo II of Blois (as Odo I , Count of Meaux-Troyes) and his wife Ermengarde of Auvergne.

Life

Stephan is first attested in 1032 in a document from the Abbey of Épernay . After his father's death in 1037 he inherited the territories newly acquired by Meaux and Troyes the core of the region Champagne form. His older brother Theobald received the family's ancestral lands on the Loire around Blois-Chartres.

Stephan and his brother were with both King Heinrich I and the Emperor Heinrich III. enemies. He lost the border castle Donchery ( Département Ardennes ) to Duke Gotzelo I of Lorraine , who received this castle from King Henry as a fief. Stephan and his brother supported Prince Odo's revolt against the king in 1041, but lost the battle of Nouy in 1044 against Count Gottfried Martel von Anjou .

Stephan died between the years 1045 and 1048 and left behind an underage son from his marriage to a woman named Adele:

  • Odo II. († after 1118), until 1063 Count of Meaux and Troyes

The guardianship of Stephan's son was taken over by his brother Theobald, who, however, ousted Odo from Champagne by 1063. Odo then joined William the Conqueror , became his brother-in-law and got the county of Aumale around 1070 .
