Stephan of Châtillon

Stephan von Châtillon (* around 1155 in Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne in the Dombes region in France ; † September 6 or 7, 1213 in Die in France; also Stephan von Die, Stephanus Deanus or Étienne) was a French Carthusian monk , bishop and Mystic .

Life

Stephen comes from the noble Châtillon family. He received a good education. At the age of 25 he asked for admission to the Charterhouse of Portes in Bénonces . In 1196 he became prior of the monastery. He was known for his piety. In 1206/1207 he reluctantly accepted the election as Bishop of Die . From 1222 the Pope was asked for canonization. He is considered the first French saint to be formally canonized by the Pope .

In 1561 his body and all canonization documents were burned by the Huguenots .

The canonization was in 1852 and 1857 by Pope Pius IX. accepted.

His feast day is not required in the Carthusian Order and is September 7th.
