Camber Castle

Haschenperg came from Moravia . From the late 1530s he worked as a fortress builder for Henry VIII. For example, in 1541/1542 Carlisle, threatened by the Scots , was converted into a fortress according to his plans . Haschenperg also came up with the first concept of a chain of coastal fortifications along the English Channel coast, which consisted of round towers surrounded by semicircular bastions . According to these plans, a number of fortresses such as Walmer or Deal Castle in Kent were rebuilt from 1538 or rebuilt such as Camber Castle near Rye . But even during the construction of the fortifications, a complete change in conception from German to Italian military architecture took place, so that the later systems of the fortress chain such as Southsea Castle near Portsmouth were no longer provided with round, but with right-angled bastions.

After Haschenperg had lost the favor of the English king and was therefore dismissed from his service in 1543, he worked briefly for the bishop of Olomouc , Johannes Dubravius .
