from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephanie Elisabeth Combs (born October 22, 1976 in Heidelberg ) is a German radiation therapist . She is professor for radiation therapy at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and director of the clinic for radio-oncology and radiation therapy at the Klinikum rechts der Isar in Munich. Stephanie E. Combs is also director of the Institute for Innovative Radiotherapy ( i RT) at the Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU). Since October 1, 2019, she has been Chairwoman of the Senate of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Deputy Chairwoman of the University Council of TUM, bodies to which she has been a member since 2018.

Life

Education

After graduating from the Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Heidelberg in 1996 (Abitur grade 1.0), she studied human medicine at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, at the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk, Virginia, and at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA), San Antonio, Texas. She received her PhD in 2003 in the neuroanatomy in Heidelberg (doctoral advisor Klaus Unsicker ) on the development of sympathoadrenal cell line under the influence of various growth factors.

Radiation oncology

She received her training in radiation oncology at the Heidelberg University Hospital and at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) Heidelberg. The special scientific focuses include high-precision radiation therapy techniques such as stereotactic radiation therapy and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). She played a key role in setting up the Heidelberg Ion Beam Therapy Center (HIT) and has acquired special expertise in the field of particle therapy with protons and heavy ions . In addition to numerous clinical studies, the radiobiological examination of the radiation effectiveness and the modification of the radiation effect was a special focus for her. The interdisciplinary cooperation with the surgical and imaging disciplines in oncology are of particular concern to her. Combs qualified as a Radiotherapy Specialist in 2009. In the same year she completed her habilitation and became a senior physician at the Radiation Oncology Clinic in Heidelberg. In 2011 she was appointed Senior Consultant in Charge of the Radiation Oncology Clinic in Heidelberg.

In addition to proven clinical expertise, Combs works on clinical and experimental issues in radio-oncology. She has set up a large working group that deals, among other things, with the optimization of therapy for brain tumors. Here, experimental approaches are processed in the laboratory in order to be subsequently used for improved patient care. Her particular expertise in this area is high-precision radiation therapy, such as stereotaxic, IMRT or particle therapy. In a large number of clinical studies, novel radiation techniques and concepts for patient treatment have been developed, not only in the area of brain tumors. She used the integration of molecular modern imaging in the concepts to improve the targeting accuracy of the irradiation. Significant progress has been made here, particularly in the area of prostate cancer and gastrointestinal tumors.

Her work has been awarded several prizes, such as the Hermann Holthusen Prize of the German Society for Radio Oncology (DEGRO), the Behnken Berger Prize and the Robert Janker Prize for Palliative Medicine. At the 2019 annual conference in Chicago of the "American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO)", she was presented with the Translational Science Award for an international multicenter study to optimize high-precision radiation therapy in patients with brain metastases (abstract by KA Kessel et al. "Hypofractionated Stereotactic Radiotherapy to the Resection Cavity in Patients with Brain Metastases: An International Multi-Institutional Analysis of Prognostic Factors and Outcomes ").

Professor

In 2014 she moved to Munich as professor and clinic director. In addition to extensive scientific activities, she heads the Clinic for Radio Oncology and Radiation Therapy, which is associated with a large chair for radiation therapy. At the medical faculty, among other things, she is inspired by student teaching. Among other things, she established the first interdisciplinary master’s degree in radiation biology (MSc Radiation Biology) in Germany, which is based at the Medical Faculty of the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Stephanie E. Combs is represented in several national and international committees at board level, including in the Neuro-Oncological Working Group (NOA). She is a proven speaker at national and international congresses. In Munich she is a board member of the Munich Tumor Center (TZM). Combs is press spokesperson for the German Society for Radio Oncology (DEGRO).

She has been a member of the Senate of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) since 2018. Combs became chair of this body on Oct. 1, 2019.
