Stephanie Nolen

Stephanie Nolen (born September 3, 1971 in Montreal ) is a Canadian journalist and book author . She works as a foreign correspondent for the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail . From 2003 to 2008 she had the special task of reporting on the effects of the AIDS pandemic in Africa . She lives in New Delhi ( India ) with her partner Meril Rasmussen and their son.

childhood and education

Nolen grew up in a Catholic family in Montreal and Ottawa . She studied journalism at the University of King's College in Halifax and then earned a Masters in Economic Development from the London School of Economics in London .

Journalistic career

Since 1993 she has worked for the prestigious Canadian daily newspaper The Globe and Mail . From 2001 to 2003 she was a correspondent in Afghanistan and Iraq . Shortly afterwards she became an Africa correspondent at her own request. Her reporting focused on developments in politically unstable countries (including Rwanda , the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Sudan , Zimbabwe and Uganda ) as well as the health, social and political effects of the AIDS epidemic in Africa .

Since 2001 she has also appeared as an author. Her third book was also published in German under the title 28 Stories about AIDS in Africa .

She has received several awards for her socially committed reporting. It was nominated six times for the prestigious National Newspaper Award in Canada and won the award in the International Reporting category twice in a row . In 2003, 2004 and 2006 she was awarded the Award for Human Rights Reporting by Amnesty International .
