His debut novel already deals with the disturbing relationship between a man who is almost obsessed with a bird and the animal whose malice, deviousness and unpredictability are threatening to its owner or its surroundings. Gregory plays through this motif in many variations in his six subsequent novels. "The Cormorant" has been reissued several times - with explanatory prefaces. The 1993 film adaptation by the BBC with Ralph Fiennes in the lead role adheres closely to the novel. The film won two Welsh BAFTA Awards . Of the following six novels, the last, “Plague of Gulls”, has only been published as an e-book.
