Mart Sander (born August 10, 1967 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian musician , actor , singer , television presenter , artist and writer .

Life

Sander studied violin as a student at the Tallinn Music High School from 1973 to 1977 . He then attended the Tallinn Ballet School from 1977 to 1980 (then called the Choreography School), and from 1983 to 1986 he learned choral conducting at the Georg Ots Music School.

He began his musical career at the Estonia National Opera , where he was a member of the ensemble from 1985 to 1991. At the same time he appeared as a soloist in the Modern Fox ensemble, which was founded in 1984 . Since the 1980s he has worked as a musician and actor in many different countries, and since the late 1980s he has also worked increasingly for Estonian radio and television .

Sander is most perceived in the musical field, but he also has a remarkable oeuvre to show as an international film actor, writer and painter . He has also appeared as a producer and director at the Estonia National Opera. In September 2014, Sander was named one of the ten most important all-rounders in Estonia by the Postimees newspaper .

Literary work

Sander writes in both English and Estonian. He made his debut in 1994 with the Estonian prose volume Mercator , which contains two “rather gloomy narratives”, “timeless and spaceless [...] texts that give little clues to concrete surroundings ... (...) What in places actually reads like a crime thriller bends suddenly from a guessed "Who-done-it" guideline and lapses into the cruel, absurd and almost supernatural. "

In 2015, the first volume of a series planned as a trilogy, Die Huren , was published, which describes the political upheaval in the course of the Second World War from the perspective of the residents of a small, exclusive Tallinn brothel . The first part covers the years 1939 and 1940 and thus deals with the departure of the Baltic Germans from Estonia and the Sovietization that followed shortly afterwards . The second part, published in 2016, deals with the year 1941 until the outbreak of the German-Soviet war and the occupation of Estonia by the German armed forces . In 2018, the series of the same name was broadcast on Estonian television.

painter

As a visual artist, Sander is self-taught . In 2006 he had his first exhibition, which was soon followed by more. In 2010 he made a portrait of her on the occasion of a concert by Madonna in Tallinn.
