James Frothingham (* 1786 in Charlestown , † January 6, 1864 in Brooklyn ) was an American painter. He created numerous portraits .

Life and works

James Frothingham was the son of a wagon builder and originally worked as a coach painter in his father's workshop. He practiced painting by making portraits of family members. He probably received his first instruction in artistic drawing and painting from Fabius Whiting from Lancaster , who in turn had learned from Gilbert Stuart . At the age of about 20 he gave up work in the carriage workshop to begin a career as an artist.

From around 1810 he was a student of Gilbert Stuart in Roxbury , although the latter had reacted very ungraciously to the first samples of Frothingham's art that were presented to him: “ 'Coach painting, sir.' 'Stick to it. You had better be a tea-waterman's horse in New York than a portrait-painter anywhere. '

In 1826, now married and the father of three children, he moved from Salem to New York. He has exhibited at the Boston Athenæum , the National Academy of Fine Arts, and the National Academy of Design ; In 1831 he became a full member of the Academy. Until 1853 he participated in exhibitions almost every year.

He spent the last two decades of his life in Brooklyn .

Portraits by Frothingham's hand ended up in the museums of the New York Historical Society and the Art Institute in Brooklyn.

Frothingham's daughter Sarah (1821–1861) became a miniature painter.
