Stephen Harrigan (* 5. October 1948 in Oklahoma City as Stephen McLaughlin ) is an American writer , journalist and screenwriter . Most of his novels , non-fiction books, and essays are about Texan history.

Harrigan was born in Oklahoma , but grew up in Texas from the age of five and currently lives in Austin . He studied at the University of Texas at Austin ( BA 1971) and then embarked on a journalistic career. From 1983 to 1991 he was one of the editors of Texas Monthly and has been a freelancer ever since . Harrigan's article has appeared in magazines such as The Atlantic , The New Yorker , Esquire , National Geographic, and Slate .
