Stephen Craig Harvey , also Steve Harvey, (born April 13, 1940 in Bakersfield ) is an American biophysicist, structural biologist and professor at the University of Alabama .

Harvey graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in 1963, was an engineer with Aerojet General (missile testing for the Apollo program) from 1963 to 1965, volunteer in the Peace Corps in Colombia from 1965 to 1967, and graduated from Dartmouth College in biophysics in 1971 PhD. He then went to the University of Alabama, where he became an assistant professor in 1973 and a full professorship in physics, biochemistry and molecular genetics in 1986. He was then a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology , where he is Emeritus Professor and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania .

He deals with the structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules, in particular with nucleic acids, virus structure and their self-assembly, the ribosome (structure-function relationships ) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). He uses various methods of computer modeling and molecular mechanics.

With J. Andrew McCammon , he wrote a textbook on molecular mechanics and dynamics in biochemistry.

He is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Biophysical Society , the American Physical Society , the American Society of Biological Chemists, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science . He is a member of the Federation of American Scientists.
