Stephen Leatherman

Stephen Parker Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach ; born November 6, 1947 in Charlotte , North Carolina ) is an American geoscientist .

Life

In 1970 Stephen Leatherman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Earth Sciences from North Carolina State University . Six years later he received his PhD from the University of Virginia . Since 1997 Stephen Leatherman has been both Director of the Laboratory of Costal Research and Director of the International Hurricane Research Center at Florida International University , where he is also a full professor (chair Professor) for Environmental studies is active. He has published numerous scientific articles on the sediment dynamics of beaches.

Leatherman is considered the most famous beach expert in the USA. Every year since 1991 he has published a list of America's Best Beaches with the most beautiful beaches in the USA . It rates the 650 best-known American beaches according to 50 criteria. a. The quality of the sand, the cleanliness of the water, the height of the waves as well as optical aspects - such as built-up or undeveloped surroundings or particularly beautiful vegetation - belong.

The coveted first places on the "Beach Doctor" list are almost always occupied by beaches in Hawaii and Florida . In order to provide variety in the first places, beaches that were once named the most beautiful beach in the country are not allowed to participate in the competition for the next ten years. Several dream beaches in Hawaii and Florida are not on the current lists for this very reason.
