Stephen Morelot (born January 12, 1820 in Dijon , † October 7, 1899 in Beaumont-sur-Vingeanne ) was a French lawyer and church music reformer.
Life
Morelot was born in Dijon in 1820. There he also became dean of the law faculty. Together with Félix Danjou he took over the editing of the Revue de la musique religieuse, populaire et classique, founded by Danjou in 1845 . In it they propagated the deprofanization of church music and its liberation from operatic elements. In 1847 he was commissioned by the Ministry of Education with a trip to Italy to research the local church singing. He also collected material for Edmond de Coussemaker's Histoire de l'harmonie au moyen âge. He himself published in particular in the magazine La Maîtrise founded in 1857 by Niedermeyer and Joseph d'Ortigue
