Oswald Hauser

Oswald Hauser (born November 9, 1910 in Altona ; † December 9, 1987 in Kiel ) was a German philologist and historian .

Life

Hauser was born in 1910 as the son of a Reichsbahn official and his wife. He studied German, history, English and philosophy in Marburg, Munich , Hamburg and Kiel. First he started at the Philipps University of Marburg . In the summer semester of 1929 he became active in the Hercynia fraternity , which later merged with the Marburg fraternity Rheinfranken . He later moved to the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . In 1935 he passed the state examination for higher teaching qualifications in Marburg and was admitted to the Philosophical Faculty in 1936 with the dissertation Gustav Frenssen as a Low German poet. Studies on the landscape and folklore of his homeland for Dr. phil. PhD . Since 1937 he was teacher at the Old School Flensburg .

In 1939 he was called up as a reserve officer for the Wehrmacht and was used in the western campaign and in the German-Soviet war . Most recently he was a captain .

On February 8, 1950 , he completed his habilitation at the Philosophical Faculty of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel for Medieval and Modern History with the work Tensions in the Anglo-Russian Entente and Possibilities of German Foreign Policy before the First World War and became a private lecturer . On April 1, 1952, he was transferred to Kiel as a teacher and taught at the Kiel School of Academics until 1959 . In 1959 he became professor and scientific advisor at the history seminar of Christian-Albrechts-Universität.

The RWTH Aachen University appointed him on 30 November 1964 the Chair of Modern History; Hauser continued to teach in Kiel. He was also a visiting professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax (Nova Scotia) and at St Antony's College of Oxford University . He retired in Aachen on April 1, 1979 .

He was head of the Franco-German historians and history teachers commission and board member of the Ranke Society and the Prussian Historical Commission (chairman from 1977 to 1987). In 1976 he became a corresponding member of the Académie d'Aix-en-Provence .

Hauser, of Protestant denomination, was married and the father of two children.
