Wolfgang J. Müller (early 1960s)

Wolfgang John Müller (born November 20, 1913 in Rostock ; † June 7, 1992 in Kiel ) was a German art historian .

Life

Wolfgang John ([joːn] as in John Brinckman ) Müller's father was a Rostock businessman and co-owner of a shipping company. From 1932 he studied art history at the University of Rostock and at the University of Munich under Wilhelm Pinder . He completed his dissertation on medieval brick ornamentation in Mecklenburg (1200-1300) with Richard Sedlmaier in July 1939; the doctorate to Dr. phil. however, it was only executed after military service and return from captivity in July 1948. In the meantime Müller had followed his teacher Sedlmaier to Kiel and made a great contribution to the reconstruction of the Kunsthistorisches Institut and the Kiel art gallery . In 1950 with a thesis on The Beginnings of Still Life : Georg Flegel completed his habilitation with Richard Sedlmaier, he stayed in Kiel, initially in an assistant position, and from 1962 as a scientific adviser and professor.

Müller shaped generations of students in Kiel, not only in his subject, but also as a liaison professor at the German National Academic Foundation .

In addition to studies on regional art history, he was particularly interested in graphics and emblems . In both areas he put on an important collection; the emblem books acquired the Kiel university library after his death.
