Stephen Stills is the first solo album by American rock musician Stephen Stills , who had achieved fame since 1967 in the groups Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) .

Musical style, chart positions and guests

After the success of their album Déjà Vu (1970), which reached number 1 on the US LP charts, all four members of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young released solo records. While Neil Young's album After the Gold Rush reached number 8 on the Billboard charts, David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name ... did not get past number 12 and Graham Nash had to be satisfied with number 15 with Songs For Beginners Stills' solo debut place 3.

The album contained the single Love The One You're With , which made it to # 14 on the US singles chart (and also top 40 in the UK), making it Stephen Stills' biggest solo hit to date . In addition, the piece Sit Yourself Down was decoupled, which rose to number 37 in the US charts.

Stills was able to win a number of prominent guests for his album: John Sebastian , David Crosby , Graham Nash , Rita Coolidge and "Mama" Cass Elliot contributed some vocal parts, Ringo Starr was "Richie" on drums for two pieces, Booker T. Jones on organ, Eric Clapton played guitar on Go Back Home and Jimi Hendrix played the same instrument on Old Times Good Times . Stephen Stills is the only album in rock history on which both Hendrix and Clapton can be heard. So with stills themselves, the record contained recordings from three of the best guitarists in rock history.

Stephen Stills also offered the listener a wide range of high-quality music musically : From the folk - rock - hippie number Love The One You're With to the gospel song Church (Part of Someone) , the acoustic southern blues Black Queen , the electric blues piece Go Back Home and the ballad To A Flame to the rock number Old Times Good Times . All songs are original compositions by Stephen Stills, who wrote all the lyrics. The songs Love The One You're With and Black Queen are still some of the most popular stills today and are still in the repertoire for live performances. From BlackQueen there is no actual studio version: Also on the album is heard in a live recording, only the 2007 on his record Just Roll Tape - April 26th, 1968 published demo version could be called Studio Recording call.

Love The One You're With has been covered many times, including a. by the Isley Brothers , who came to number 18 in the US charts with their gospel version of the song in 1971, Aretha Franklin , who recorded the song live as a soul piece in 1971 , the British pop group Bucks Fizz , to whom their pop Version reached number 47 in the British charts, and most recently in 2006 by British jazz musician Denis Rollins on his album Big Night Out! . These extremely different interpreters already show the musical scope of the piece, which has hardly lost its appeal to this day. There are also other interpretations of the song by Joe Cocker , the Les Humphries Singers , Engelbert the Supremes along with the Four Tops and Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young). The title line Love The One You're With was allegedly taken over by Stills - and with his consent - from Billy Preston .

Stephen Stills was never able to build on the success of his solo debut as a solo artist. His debut album is also his best-selling and is still on Atlantic Records .
