The star moss-like four-pointed moss ( Tetraplodon mnioides ) is a deciduous moss species from the Splachnaceae family .
features
The moss grows in individual, smaller, moderately dense, 1 to 3 centimeter high cushioned lawns. The egg-shaped leaves are pointed, the rib ends in the awl tip. The lamina cells are elongated at the base of the leaf and hexagonal at the top. The seta is yellowish to reddish and 1 to 3 centimeters long, the capsule and the clearly developed capsule neck are ripe, conspicuously black-red. The capsule neck (apophysis) is longer and usually slightly wider than the urn (theka, part of the spore capsule that contains the spores). Both are about the same color.
Location claims and distribution
The species grows on debris, manure and animal corpses. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, it can be found in the Alps, but it is not common. Worldwide there are occurrences in Eurasia, North America and in tropical high mountains.
