Star set mushrooms ( Asterostroma , also known as star mushrooms) are a genus of different species of wood-destroying mushrooms.

features

Star set mushrooms form thin, flat-lying fruiting bodies, which in the two species occurring in Europe differ mainly in color. Both usually have a light incremental edge, which in the case of the salmon-colored star set mushroom, in contrast to the ocher-colored mushroom, is often blurred and ends in strands.

The mycelium is whitish-yellow in color. Specific and eponymous are the star-shaped setae (outgrowths) of the hyphae , which can only be seen under the microscope.

ecology

So far, star set mushrooms have been detected in damp roof structures, basements, walls, sub-floor spaces and neglected buildings. The first building evidence comes from the beginning of the 20th century. Their strands overgrow masonry and can also grow through it to form fruiting bodies and likely to colonize new wood as well. The infestation with star set fungi is not as aggressive as that with real dry rot , but only little data is available.

It seems certain, however, that the star set mushrooms need a very high level of moisture in wood and masonry for their growth - that is, they are very wet. The star set mushrooms cause intense white rot , so that if fruit bodies or mycelium are found there is damage to the wood that must be localized.

Systematics

Up to 20 species are known worldwide. There are two to three species in Europe, including the following:
