The Sterntor is a listed gate system in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located on the northeast corner of Domplatz in Magdeburg's old town, immediately east of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt .

Design and history

The baroque star gate was built in 1723 by order of the fortress builder Gerhard Cornelius von Walrave . It was nine meters high and six meters wide and weighed 100 tons. served as the northern entrance gate to the inner ring of Fort Berge . Fort Berge was a fort of Magdeburg Fortress located south of Magdeburg, roughly in the area south of today's Hegelstrasse, which was also known as the Sternschanze due to its characteristic layout , from which the name of the gate, which is still in use today, results.

Fort Berge was demolished in 1905, although the Sterntor was retained and stood at the southern end of Hegelstrasse. In 1910 the gate was also removed and initially stored in the front garden of today's cultural history museum . There were plans to rebuild the gate in Berlin . In 1922 it was therefore transported to Berlin and stored in a cellar on Berlin's Museum Island . However, the gate was later brought back to Magdeburg and temporarily stored there.

Under Mayor Fritz-August Wilhelm Markmann , the gate was then rebuilt between the Sankt-Nikolai-Kirche and the Dompropstei on the northwest corner of the Domplatz, between today's Green Citadel of Magdeburg and the Nord / LB building. During the air raid on Magdeburg on January 16, 1945 , the Sterntor, among other things, was badly damaged.

The gate, initially secured in a makeshift manner, was then dismantled in 1959 in connection with the demolition of the ruins of St. Nicholas' Church. The preserved parts were initially stored on the grounds of the monastery Our Dear Women , from 1968 onwards at Paul-Schuster-KG. In 1970 there were plans to rebuild the north-west corner of the cathedral square, but they were not implemented.

In 2004 a board of trustees was established to rebuild the star gate. The northeast corner of the Domplatz was chosen as the location because the gate there closes the Domplatz, blends in with the baroque neighboring buildings, closes a vacant lot and resumes the historical building line. By spanning a footpath, the Sterntor can also be experienced as a gate and provides access to the Domplatz. Master builder Walrave also lived a little further west of the gate, in house 9 Domplatz .

The area of the new location belongs to the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt , which gave its approval for the construction. The foundation of the gate was built in early 2005 as part of redesign work on Domplatz. The actual laying of the foundation stone took place on September 17, 2008. The gate was then rebuilt as a new building. The actual star gate was never free, but was the decorative facing of the fortress wall, so that the gate body had to be built as a new building. With donations raised and Lotto-Toto funds, the construction and subsequent installation of the historical sandstone elements, which were still stored at the Schuster company, took place. Missing parts were added as newly made elements. The decoration side was oriented to the south towards the cathedral square. Historically, a decorated back was not part of the Sterntor.

In June 2015, the 500 kilogram cartridge, decorated with the Prussian coat of arms , crown and fern fronds, was inserted into the portal. A zinc sheet cover is planned to be created in 2017.

Currently (as of 2017) the six meter wide and three meter high crowning of the gate made of sandstone elements is still missing. However, these elements are only partially preserved in the original in the form of two large heads and are stored at the Schuster company. In this respect, too, the missing parts should be added. The progress of the work depends on the availability of sufficient donations. The Volksbank Magdeburg , the Rotkäppchen-Mumm Sektkellerei and the Stadtsparkasse Magdeburg participated with larger donations .

In the local register of monuments , the gate system is listed as a monument under registration number 094 71182 .
