Steve Fidyk

Steve Fidyk (* 1961 or 1962 ) is an American jazz musician ( drums ) of modern jazz and university lecturer, who is also active as an author and columnist.

Live and act

Fidyk got his first drum kit at the age of four; his father played the saxophone in northeastern Pennsylvania. He played early as a drummer in his father's band. He studied music education at Wilkes University ; after receiving his bachelor's degree, he continued his studies as a jazz interpreter at the University of Maryland (College Park), where he received his master's degree. He also had lessons with Joe Morello since 1987 . He gained his first experience as a professional musician in the big band of Bob Wilber , later under Tom Heinze . For 25 years he acted as a drummer in the US Army Blues .

The first recordings were made in 1996 with saxophonist Mike Tomaro (Forgotten Dreams) . In the following years Fidyk also worked in Virginia and Pennsylvania with Chris Vadala , Harry Watters, Matt Niess, the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra, Ryan Haines Big Band, Graham Breedlove Sextet, The Capitol Bones Big Band ; he was also co-leader of the Mark Taylor / Steve Fidyk Big Band . Around 2013 Fidyk recorded the album Heads Up! Under his own name . (Posi-Tone) on which Terell Stafford , Tim Warfield , Shawn Purcell (guitar) and Regan Brough (bass) performed. In the field of jazz, he was involved in 22 recording sessions between 1996 and 2016, with Brian Charette and Doug Webb in the 2010s . In 2019 he belongs to the band of Walt Weiskopf .

Fidyk teaches jazz at Temple University in Philadelphia; also at the Jazz at Lincoln Center in the Ellington Program . He has also written drums textbooks and published instructional DVDs with Mel Bay and Alfred Publications.
