Steven Francis "Steve" Jones (born October 18, 1960 in Liverpool ) is a former English football player .

Career

Jones was a representative of the Bootle district in 1976 of the Merseyside U15 school selection (teammates include Colin Russell ) and joined Manchester United while he was still at school. At Manchester, the midfielder was part of the professional squad from 1977 to 1979, but did not get beyond missions in the reserve team.

In May 1979 he was obliged for the coming season from fourth division Port Vale after he had scored 22 goals for Manchester's reserve team in the Lancashire League in the 1978/79 season . The financially troubled club was only able to sign two free transfer players in addition to Jones with Terry Owen and Alan Woolfall during the summer break . In a chaotic 1979/80 season that saw three different club coaches ( Dennis Butler , Alan Bloor , John McGrath ), the club placed thanks to two successes in the last two game days (including a goal from Jones in the 3-0 win against the Doncaster Rovers on the last day of the match) in 20th place and thus only escaped re-election due to the more goals scored against Hereford United .

At Port Vale, Jones did not succeed in the following season under McGrath to establish himself permanently in the team. The last time Jones, who was called up in midfield and attack, came in a competitive game in January 1981 and left the club after a total of 30 competitive appearances (3 goals) at the end of the season free of charge. He continued his career in the Northern Premier League at Oswestry Town ; in October 1985 he joined Formby FC , playing in the North West Counties League .
