Steve de Shazer

Steve de Shazer (born June 25, 1940 in Milwaukee , † September 11, 2005 in Vienna ) was an American psychotherapist and author .

Life

Steve de Shazer was trained in classical music and played jazz professionally as a saxophonist . At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee , he earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts and a master's degree in social work .

Together with his wife Insoo Kim Berg , Steve de Shazer developed a solution-oriented short therapy based on the work of Milton Erickson , Ludwig Wittgenstein and Jacques Derrida . In contrast to systemic therapy , in solution-focused short therapy the system of the client / therapist / team behind the mirror is viewed as the relevant system. Any analysis of the client system is dispensed with. In 1978, the couple founded the Brief Family Therapy Center (BFTC) in Milwaukee , which closed in 2007.

In John Weakland , with whom de Shazer was friends, he saw his mentor .

De Shazer died of complications from pneumonia in Vienna, where he was staying to hold a seminar.
