Steven Saylor (born March 23, 1956 in Port Lavaca , Texas ) is an American writer who mainly writes historical novels . He graduated with a degree in history and classical studies from the University of Texas at Austin .

Although he also wrote novels about Texan history, he is mainly and in the German-speaking area almost exclusively known for his crime series Roma Sub Rosa , which is set in ancient Rome at the end of the republic . The protagonist of the novels is a “private detective” named Gordianus (the seeker, in the English-language original the Finder), whom Saylor has Sulla , Cicero , Caesar and Cleopatra meet among others . For the novel Catilina's Riddle he received the Lambda Literary Award in 1994 in the category Gay men's mystery . For his 1999 novel, Rubicon (dt. No turning back from the Rubicon) awarded him in 2000. The Historical Mystery Appreciation Society (HMAS) with the Herodotus Award in the category of historical Best US Roman from. In 2004, the Swedish crime magazine Jury awarded Saylor the Flintyxan as the best historical crime novel for Romarblod (Original: Roman Blood , German Cicero's smile).

Prior to his historical novels, he wrote and published erotic literature under the pseudonym Aaron Travis .
