The Steyr 120 Super is a car of the upper middle class , which the Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG produced from the 1935th The moderately streamlined body was designed by director Karl Jenschke . It essentially corresponded to that of the smaller Steyr 100 . The four-door cars had doors that closed against each other (the front hinged at the front, the rear ones at the rear), whereby the center post - the B-pillar - was omitted. Their bodies were made by glasses in Dresden .
The car had a six-cylinder in-line engine installed at the front, which drove the rear wheels via a four-speed gearbox. The front wheels were suspended on transverse leaf springs, the rear swing axle had pushed cantilever quarter-elliptic leaf springs . The six-cylinder engines were significantly more powerful than the four-cylinder of the smaller models. Alpine passes such as the Turracher Höhe did not cause any difficulties. Exactly 1200 copies were made by 1936.
In 1936 the car was revised. He got a wider track and a bigger engine with the same power. The new model was mainly sold to Germany as the Steyr 125 Super and remained on sale until 1937. It was only built 200 times.
In 1937 the unchanged body received a larger and more powerful engine. The new Steyr 220 was well known and loved as a powerful car and exactly 5900 units were built by 1941. A copy of this model from 1938 is in the Aspang Automobile Museum in Aspang-Markt in Lower Austria .
The model is famous as the escape car of the concentration camp prisoner Kazimierz Piechowski , who on June 20, 1942 managed to pass the camp gate in a stolen SS uniform with the official car of Auschwitz camp commandant Rudolf Höß and successfully escape.
