The Favor - Help, my wife is in love! ( The Favor ) is an American film comedy by Donald Petrie from the year 1994 .
action
Kathy Whiting is in her thirties, has been married to Peter for years and has two young daughters. However, she often thinks of the then very attractive Tom Andrews, with whom she had a relationship in high school, but which remained platonic for decency reasons. The question of how it could have been physically with him, and whether he is still as desirable today as it was then, drives her. So she gets her best friend Emily, who is of the same age and who keeps switching from one affair to the next - she has just ended an affair with ten years younger Elliott Fowler - to meet Tom in order to have this experience for her to sleep him; she doesn't want to do this herself in order not to cheat on her husband. When Emily is then overly enthusiastic about Tom, Kathy's need for Tom flares up all the more, which puts a strain on the women's friendship.
Emily learns that she is pregnant, decides to have the child, and explains to Kathy that she does not want to tell Elliot, the father, anything about it. Kathy is of the opinion that Elliott must find out, and seeks him in his apartment, what her husband Peter observes, he reacts with jealousy. Angry about Kathy's actions, Emily now claims to her that in reality Tom is the father of her child-to-be. Now Kathy travels to Tom to inform him about it, but mostly because she desires him above all else. Everyone else involved learns of their trip in different ways and follows it, there is a general meeting in Tom's house. In the end, Kathy realizes that she loves Peter alone (Tom obviously only wants sex from the women), Elliot and Emily want to have the baby together and get married, according to Emily, Elliot is now the father.
Reviews
James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was the most original ("which doesn't mean" the best ") romantic comedy in theaters at the time of writing. The story is told from the perspective of two women, which is not up to standard in masculine-dominated Hollywood. The performances of the female leading actresses are "solid". Bill Pullman appears in the role of the "nice but boring" husband "credible".
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on April 29, 1994 that the film was "clever" and "fascinating". The scriptwriters have a feeling for female friendships, the dialogues are "alive". However, the film does not work as a comedy.
The lexicon of the international film saw an "entertaining marriage comedy without any special claims, but which illuminates (inter-) human weaknesses in a loving, funny and somewhat satirical way."
background
The film was in Portland ( Oregon turned). It grossed approximately $ 3.1 million in US cinemas .
