Lists on the subject

The Steyr M1912 (also known as Steyr 1912 and Steyr-Hahn ) is an Austrian pistol in the caliber 9 × 23 mm and 9 × 19 mm . It was produced from 1912 to 1945 and used by Austrian, German and allied armed forces during the First and Second World Wars .

History and technology

The Austro-Hungarian Army had already replaced its old Rast & Gasser military revolver with the Roth-Steyr M1907 , but the Roth-Steyr did not prove itself. In particular, their security features were criticized. Thereupon the weapons works in Steyr presented a new weapon in 1911. In this case, the fixed box magazine in the pistol grip was retained, it can be filled either with individual cartridges or via loading strips . The M1912 uses stronger ammunition; the locking mechanism results in a rotatable barrel . After the release of the shot the barrel is a short distance with the carriage return, but then milled in the casing scenes rotated by 30 ° and thus unlocks the slide.

This solution was extremely reliable. In contrast to the German pistol 08 , not only was the loading mechanism better protected against contamination, but it also proved to be more tolerant of fluctuations in the cartridge load. On the other hand, the German pistol was quicker to load thanks to its interchangeable magazine and had a more favorable grip angle. Around 300,000 of the Steyr M1912 were built. After the annexation of Austria these were taken over by the army weapons office as pistol 12 (ö) in the equipment of the German armed forces . Many examples were converted to the 9 mm Parabellum cartridge and marked with the 08 mark on the slide.

The Steyr M12 / P16 was the world's first row fire pistol .
