Stichococcus forms single or paired connected cells , or simple unbranched threads from a series of uniformly shaped cells with a thin cell wall. The cells are cylindrical, straight or slightly curved, with rounded cell ends also within a thread. In every cell there is a walled chloroplast with or without a pyrenoid . The cells always grow in the same direction through cell division.

The asexual reproduction is done by Fadenfragmentation.

Sexual reproduction is unknown.

distribution

The genus lives in the plankton of lakes and rivers; also on moist substrates such as earth, stones, flower pots or tree bark. Stichococcus can also act as an algae partner in lichen symbioses.
