Voices in Time (original title Voci nel Tempo ) is an Italian film by Franco Piavoli .

action

Filming location Castellaro Lagusello

The film shows the cycle of life through the inhabitants of a small Lombard village, who are observed over the course of a year. After a baby and then a toddler can be seen at the beginning, younger and finally older children can be seen playing in the village square and in the nearby woods, where spring has come. The children play at the nearby lake and explore the gloom of the village church. The children are the focus of the camera, there are only occasional interactions with villagers of other generations.

On another day, when summer has already come, the camera initially follows a group of young men driving through the village on scooters and motorcycles. The young men and women of the village flirt with one another with looks and gestures. At a subsequent village festival, many come closer, while the hope of others for tenderness remains unfulfilled. A young couple spends a night together in the field.

The film jumps to a day in late summer when a wedding is taking place in the village. The guests, who are now the focus, are mostly middle-aged and enjoy the food, dance - not quite as fast as the young people - lovingly together and sing folk songs. Again and again one sees, apart from the dancing couples, people of advanced age who look somewhat longingly and melancholy at the younger wedding guests. In the evenings, people meet in the few village bars to talk together. This day's shots end with a corpulent man eating a melon in his kitchen at night.

When the next day of village life is shown, it is already autumn and the leaves are noticeably falling from the trees. The focus is on older people who can only move around with difficulty and observe village life. They look out the window, meet and slowly take a walk, watching the children playing. An old man looks at the picture of his deceased wife and goes to bed. The last shot of the autumn day shows the lake shrouded in fog and a man crossing it in a rowboat.

One last day takes place in winter, the village is shrouded in snow and many residents take a trip to the frozen lake. Families go sledding and many children skate. The film ends, underlaid by Pachelbel's canon in D major , with an old man and a child walking across the lake together.

background

Voices in Time , a semi-documentary feature film, was made in the town of Castellaro Lagusello , which has around 300 inhabitants and whose church is one of the main tourist attractions. Lagusello is the neighboring village of Pozzolengo , the hometown of the director Franco Piavoli. He did not shoot the film with professional actors, but with residents of the village and friends. Piavoli only included dialogues in a few places in his film; the images and sounds generated are more important for the film.

After Il pianeta azzuro (1982) and Nostos, il ritorno (1989), Voci nel Tempo was only the third full-length film by the filmmaker Piavoli. In 2014, Piavoli named a few motifs and thoughts that can also be felt in Voci nel Tempo as a central necessity why he makes films :

“It's exactly that: to design characters, figures that are trapped in my flora and fauna, and to share this with others. People are not individuals in the absolute sense. They participate with others, are born by others, and thrive by feeling connected with others. I believe that there is an innate need to exchange ideas and to enter into a symbiosis with others, not only with the people who are close to us, but also with those who are far away. "

Awards

The Film Festival of Venice in 1996 was Voci nel tempo shown and won the Critics' Prize "Federazione Italiana dei Cineclub" (Fedic). Piavoli also received nominations for two other Italian film awards for his camera work.
