A Bindi ( Hindi : बिंदी, Bindi , from Sanskrit : बिनदु, bindu, drop point) is a middle of the forehead between the eyebrows of painted point or a glued at this point jewelry where the energetic, third eye is suspected.

Religious origins

The original bindi is the specially feminine form of the tilaka , the Hindu forehead sign as a religious mark. The region between the eyebrows on which the bindi is placed is considered the sixth chakra and seat of secret knowledge in Hindu beliefs .

Today's meaning

First of all, this traditional red point is the symbol of the married woman and is intended to protect not only her but also her husband. Today bindis in India are worn by unmarried as well as married women, even young children. They are more popular than ever. While the bindi used to indicate whether a woman was married or not, this is no longer exclusively the case today.

A point on the forehead is mandatory for married Hindu women, regardless of whether they wear it in a classic red and round shape or as a colored ornamental sticker. Only when they become a widow do they give up this jewelry. Unmarried people can wear a bindi, which is then a pure decoration or a sign of blessing, a tika or tilaka . Even Muslim Indian women today often stick this fashionable item on, which would have been unthinkable a few years ago.

to form

Traditional points are applied with red powder paint, Sindur (Sindoor) , Kumkum (a) or turmeric . Today, reusable, stick-on jewelry ties are the most common. These are available in all colors and in a variety of ornamental shapes, for example golden or set with tiny artificial pearls or stones. Such jewelry ties are also becoming more and more fashionable in the West .

A special type of bindi is the wedding bindi. This consists of a number of small bindis that are glued along the eyebrows and is worn by the bride at her wedding party.
