Stizus is a genus of digger wasps (Spheciformes) from the Crabronidae family. The genus comprises 127 species, which are mainly found in the hot and warm climatic regions of the world. There are 11 speciesin Europe, one of them, Stizus perrisi , also in Central Europe.

features

The digger wasps are strongly built and reach a body length of up to 34 millimeters. They are colored yellow and black, more rarely also red.

Way of life

The females create single-cell nests. While the female flies out, the nest entrance is not closed. The brood is fed with locusts and praying mantises. The larvae take five to seven days to develop and then pupate in a cocoon similar to those of the genus Bembix with a large opening at one end and a small opening at the side. Through this the larva takes up sand, with which it lines the inner wall mixed with a secretion. First the large opening and finally the small one is closed with material. The cocoon is hardened after a day.
